Captains blame good play, dedication for great season

Posted under Uncategorized

(ST. PAUL) — MPR softball captains Jill Riley and Tom Weber on Friday blamed good play and dedication for the team’s great season, despite efforts by the two leaders to instill no such qualities.

“We finished the season strong and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, which I frankly don’t understand,” noted a befuddled Weber. “I even had that one game where I kept missing the ball in the outfield to try to set an example.

The team finished 2009 with a 14-17 record and showcased impressive displays, including the inning during the tournament when MPR retired Cherry Pit in order – possibly a team first. Other examples include a ridiculous 22-4 win over the Treehuggers and a disgusting game in which Gus Liepitz hit two grand slams.

“Hell, Riley practically amputated her foot to lower expectations,” added Weber, a reference to Captain Jill’s ankle injury that ended her season just a few weeks before it even began. “I simply don’t know what we could have done to inspire them to be more lackluster,” bemoaned Riley. “I smoked during games. I brought beer. I called the Tuesday group ‘Team Fun’ – but no matter what I did, they kept winning with somewhat regularity.”

Efforts to produce a bad season appeared hopeful early on, given the captains’ decision to schedule only a smattering of pre-season practices and Riley’s aforementioned injury, which she suffered while wrestling a bear during a RollerGirl competition at Como Zoo. Riley and Weber also recruited a number of rookies to play, thinking their inexperience would aid losing.

But most of the rookies ended up being completely competent and even skilled in some cases. “I tried to suck, I really did” admitted rookie Andy Ducett. “But closing my eyes before every pitch actually seemed to help my hitting. I’m as confused as you, man.”

Even after a few initial wins – powered by unsolicited hitting from Liepitz, Mason Wibstad and Jim Bickal – Captain Tom was still encouraged by a rash of injuries that promised to keep things sub-par.

Srini Radakrishna broke a finger while fielding a ground ball and rookie Jim McGuinn hurt himself in just about every game he played. “It was weird,” noted McGuinn, while trying to jam a fork into his cheek. “I would get hurt, but then we’d keep winning. I’ve never played on a team like that before.”

Once the winning attained what Weber called a “ridiculous” pace, he authorized “Operation Windfall.” Through an elaborate scheme, years in the making, Weber had team fart Tom Rothman suffer a heart attack during a May 28th game. “I really thought that was going to be the thing to make the team really bad,” recalled Rothman, “along with the constant Bronx cheers at my own son.”

While Rothman’s ailment proved successful in capping an MPR loss that night, his return a few days later as a spectator fueled a curious victory that actually snapped a short losing streak. “I was completely dumbfounded,” admitted Captain Jill. “I thought Tom’s heart attack plan was perfect, but then we kept winning. I was kind of out of ideas at that point.”

Rothman later defied Operation Windfall by recovering enough to play during the end-of-year tournament, which caused an area bartender to overserve Ben Wareham, prompting Wareham to break team curfew.

There were still a few bright spots later in the season: Captain Jill had Old Tom Scheck return for a game, but that proved to be only a short-term help in one loss. Mason Wibstad acted completely inappropriately and smug during one game by fielding a ball – and was almost successful in starting a fight with an opposing team’s player. And Johnny Rothman struck out magnificently during a game, but that only seemed to inspire the team to not be like Johnny.

“Even Johnny didn’t want to be like himself,” noted Linda Wareham. “I think he started actually hitting better after that.”

Wareham added that she couldn’t be blamed for team’s good play, noting her efforts as a third base coach and in trying to get the Scheck dog drunk. “You can’t pin our winning on me, so don’t even go there,” she noted. Wareham was later seen throwing eggs at Gary Eichten’s car.

In the end, the team won three of five games during the tournament, a disappointingly formidable showing for Weber. “I won the coin toss during every tournament game because I thought being home team all the time would throw people off,” he said. “I appreciate Mason striking out during that one tournament game, but then he follows it up with good hitting. And Gus kept hitting homeruns. They were both such jackasses that day.”

Weber and Riley were in their first year as team captains; Jim Bickal left in disgrace last year, following back-to-back league championships. The two newbies say they’d welcome any advice on how to tone down the winning next year and plan to meet frequently during the off-season.

“I’m about ready to tie one of Fred Child’s arms around his back and make Suds play first base without a glove, but I hope it doesn’t come to that,” said Weber. “I appreciate Brian Bakst drinking beer during the Pups vs. Farts game, for example, but maybe next year he’ll try that during games that actually count.”

Farts win game; Pups still better-looking

Posted under Uncategorized

The old Farts won the annual Pups vs. Farts game in a battle royale on Tuesday, 19-14.  The game was marred helped by rampant beer-drinking, including Brian Bakst’s well-played sip after making a catch in the outfield.

Tom Rothman, who only returned this month from the DL to play in the tournament, was photographed (by Tim Post) hitting the ball…

dsc_0021

Tim Post, in his first Pups/Farts game, was originally pegged to play on the Farts – then switched to the Pups – then back to the Farts.  The cut-off age was 35.

The Farts’ biggest inning was their 11-run 4th, in which they attained all those runs with nothing but singles and walks.  The game was called after five innings because the Pups were worried the Farts might not see the ball so well, with their old eyes – and well, that’s just a safety issue.

We all headed to Chalk Talk, but not before a group photo:

Chalk Talk was well-attended, though Gus’s gambling-enabling only resulted in us not winning money.

Line score:

Farts 0 3 5 11 0 19
Pups 4 3 7 0 0 14

A tournamental day of softball

Posted under Uncategorized

MPR played five games during Saturday’s tournament, winning three.  We didn’t win the championship, but as Linda Wareham always says, when she’s not getting dogs drunk: “We’re champions in our hearts and feet.”

Here’s a recap:
Game 1 — Loss to Capitol Offenders
CO – 222 045 – 15
MPR – 030 220 – 7

Ben Wareham was a late scratch for breaking team curfew…

dsc_05991

Even so, MPR made a go of it until the last couple innings, when the Offenders broke away to win 15-7.  Gus had a nice triple and scored twice; Fred knocked in a couple runs.  Johnny hurt his finger.  The loss, though, was all part of Captain Tom’s scheme to win the tournament via the loser’s bracket.

Game 2 – Win vs. Pino’s Pizza
Pino’s – 050 010 2 – 8
MPR   – 700 205 x – 14
Despite some team members never having heard of Pino’s, MPR pulled off a nice 14-8 win, thanks to a 7-run first inning that included a boatload of singles to the left side.

Ben Wareham, fresh off his hangover nap…

… hit two home runs and knocked in six runs.  He was banned from playing the third game for hitting too many homers.

The game also included the tallest umpire in MPR softball history.

Game 3 – Win vs. History Center
His.  – 000 300 – 3
MPR – 525 42x – 18

MPR scored an 18-3 rout of the History Center, despite Mason’s horribly awful strikeout in the first inning.

dsc_0606

Gus hit two home runs and scored thrice.  Jeff Bina also played.  After the game, some folks went to McDonald’s and brought back food for the parched team.

Game 4 – Win vs. Cherry Pit!
Cpit – 020 410 – 7
MPR – 010 511 – 8

After losing twice during the season to Cherry Pit, MPR feared the day might end here.  But Gus had yet another home run, helping MPR beat Cherry Pit 8-7!  A Jeff Johnson single in bottom of the sixth scores the winning run, Srini.

dsc_0601

Game 5 – Loss to OBB
OBB – 203 056 – 16
MPR – 110 303 – 8

We held OBB close until the last two innings, when either the gas ran out or our subs messed it all up.  Johnny Rothman had three doubles and scored three runs.  Laurie Johnson just kept pitching and pitching and pitching.  Linda Wareham’s parents watched.  So did Jim Bickal, back in Minnesota from his vacation.

6480_115186729683_603429683_2141422_1968553_n6480_115186709683_603429683_2141418_2915369_n

The late rally in the last inning, though, wasn’t enough as the MPR season ended there on field four.  All were pleased, though, with the day’s play and Chalk Talk was immediately ordered.

Other notes:
– Captain Tom won the coin toss every game and MPR (maybe for the first time ever?) was home team in every tournament game.
– Srini had a flat tire after the tournament that Captain Tom changed.
– At Chalk Talk, Gus won $104 in pull tabs.
– The day marked the return of Tom Rothman!
– Laurie Johnson and Johnny Rothman played every single inning.

Ending the regular season on a high note (even with a loss)

Posted under Uncategorized

MPR played Cherry Pit on Thursday, a team we’ve lost to many times before by wider margins.  AND!  With so many players gone, we had a skeleton crew of 12 – but we hung in there and even rallied in the final inning before only falling 13-12.

A great effort!  One that included a 6-run fourth inning; Johnny Rothman and Tom Scheck both hitting solo homers; and MPR retiring Cherry Pit 1-2-3 for the first time, possibly, in team history.

The three people in this photo also had big games!

dsc_0305

Emily Reese had three hits!  (including at least 2 smoking line drives up the middle + 2 RBIs)  Tracy Fisher had her first hit of the season and scored a run!  And Johnny Vince had a dribbling hit that became a single, RBI, and later a run in the 4th.

And!  Captains Tom and Jill are big proponents of getting young talent going early, even if it means a rebuilding year.  After the game, Babies Scheck and Baskt practiced a lap around the bases for the one day they’ll both be called upon to play on the MPR team…

Giving them false hope…

Posted under Uncategorized

MPR lost to Top Floor 22-17 Tuesday nite, giving opponents a false sense of security heading into the tournament.  But at least the Warehams were there to play.  Emily Reese reports having her best hit ever.

But look at this!  Look what CNN does now — a segment called ‘Chalk Talk!’  We should sue…

A new cornhole champion!

Two-time defending cornhole champ Tom Scheck was mercilessly unseated from the throne on Saturday when Phil Miller won the third annual MPR softball cornhole tournament.

Phil played Jim Bickal in the finals; Jim’s loss in the championship match was his first loss all day.  Congrats, Phil!  (photos/Brian Bakst)

A hard-fought loss, and a beer

Posted under Uncategorized

Thursday’s beer was well worth it, after an exciting – albeit losing – effort.  MPR fell to the Capitol Offenders 18-15.

Tom Scheck had a nice catch in the outfield, and Doug got his wings…

One final note: This photo was from last week, but look at Oban Scheck!  He’s eating a ball!  Oh, that dog.
