Big win over the Treehuggers!

Posted under Uncategorized

MPR wins!  22-4 over the Treehuggers.  Everyone was a hitter Tuesday night – except for the three no-shows (boo!).  Captain Jill reports that Randall and Mason both tried shortstop for the first time and did well.  Chris Bjork pitched a beauty!

Weird night of double-headerness…

Posted under Uncategorized

Maybe it was the fact that we were trying to get dogs drunk…

But Thursday was weird, man.  In game one vs. BDubs, MPR held a 14-11 lead in the last inning when one of their players was hurt to the point of needing an ambulance.

After a pause, the game resumed and was played to a 14-14 tie.  That’s the official league score, but the team historian noted afterwards that the injured player should have been the final out of the game, so MPR will record game one as a win.

At least Mason knew how to hit the ball…

But then in game two, the rally caps were needed… very early on.

Money Shots just. kept. hitting. the ball.  Final score – 24-3.  OOF!  MPR was at risk of being shut out until the final inning, when Tim Dennis, Captain Tom and Andy Ducett drove in the team’s only runs.   (note: photos by Tim Post)

MPR lost 33-19 on Tuesday (7/21) but at least found a possible Wick candidate in the opponents’ catcher.

A double-header split

Posted under Uncategorized

MPR split its double-header Tuesday, becoming roadkill to Roadkill 29-10, then winning an extra inning affair against Alary’s, 18-14.  It was an evening marked by dark clouds and cold beer…

Some people spent their time taking photos of people taking photos…

…. or photos of people taking photos of people taking photos…

But it doesn’t matter!  Even those more worried about food than playing good softball found a way to have fun.

And the reason for that is because of the high note the team ended on, with an exciting 8-inning game vs. Alary’s.  See all the highlights here:

A forfeit, a strikeout, and a win…

Posted under Uncategorized

MPR softball won Thursday night’s game via forfeit, as Sine Die didn’t have enough women.  So, technically the score was 7-0.  But the two teams played anyway, sometimes through a light mist, and MPR won that contest as well 21-15 (aided primarily by scoring seven runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings).

But this story has very little to do with the game, except for one at-bat.  An at-bat that will live in infamy by Johnny Rothman

dsc_4938

Johnny’s trip to the plate in the 3rd inning saw a monster swing and a miss for strike one.  Surely he wouldn’t do that again, would he?  He did.  Maybe his new nickname should be “Johnny K” – it was amazingly spectacular, folks.  Here’s a shot of him after that at-bat…

dsc_4962

Fortunately for him, the K wasn’t recorded.  But his next at bat was…

There were, however, other highlights.  The game marked the debut of Emily Bina, who hat a hit and scored twice…

… and the return of Ben Wareham, who appeared quite confused the whole game…

dsc_4940

Ben apparently forgot how to play softball in China, as we went 1-4.  But Andy Ducett went 3-3 and Jim Bickal went 4-4!  Tim Post had a very impressive roll-over in right field, and Captain Tom was a loud, beligerent mess the entire game… probably the result of being cast off by his own team to play for Sine Die – who was short a few players – only to be cast off by Sine Die once a few more of their players then showed up.  Captain Tom was a man without a team Thursday, and he yelled a lot.

Grand Gus!

This man, whose name is Gus, is awesome:

Gus, it turns out, knows how to hit a softball.  He hit two of them Tuesday in a way that resulted in TWO GRAND SLAMS for MPR, helping the team to an 11-10 win.

Click here to see a video of one of those Grand Slams!

In other news from the game, there were some injuries – like Suzanne’s…

… and there were some great catches, like Allison’s and Jim’s here (before and after the catch)…

… and it was nice to see Captain Jill, sans cast, even if she was chewed out by a little kid for smoking…

In the end, Fred snagged a line drive that started the game-ending double play to allow MPR to head to Chalk Talk victorious!

The Iron Ten Prevails

Posted under Uncategorized

dsc_4452

Only ten MPR players (including Jill Riley in her on-field season debut) were on hand, so they all played the whole game… and triumphed! The MPR Iron Ten beat the Treehuggers by a final score of 23 to 12. Linda Fantin reports that she had her best game ever, reaching base every time up and making three outs in one inning at second base. In addition to Jill’s return to the lineup (she played catcher in the field), it was good to see Srini at shortstop after being sidelined with a finger injury.

So close!

Doug Horrisberger could only look on with total disdain Thursday night as a late MPR rally fell short.

After scoring four times in the final inning, MPR lost 8-7 to the History Center folks.  Jim Bickal knocked in six of the team’s seven runs!  Elsewhere, Johnny Rothman scored thrice and Captain Tom also scored two runs, though Tom still has a good five weeks of penance to make up for defensive blunders of games past.

Most teammates agreed the team probably could have won if Michael Jackson’s death had been the only event of the day; but to add Farrah Fawcett’s death, the launch of the NewsQ website, and the fact that this was the first game Bill Wareham played without his dearly departed bat — it was just too much.

Does our website need a new look?

With all this talk of new websites, we’re wondering if the look of this website should change.  For example, that banner across the top — should we change it or keep it?

Here are some possible candidates for a new banner – let us know what you think:

Beating the heat, and the B-Dubs

Posted under Uncategorized

dsc_3626

The Tues night team pulled off a victory Tuesday!!  A 14-12 win over B-Dubs.   Gus hit a grand slam.  Chris and Mason also had home runs.   No injuries were reported.

According to Linda Wareham’s Facebook status update:  “Apparently, softball in 86 degree weather is more bearable if you win.  Take that, weather.”  Wareham then reportedly kicked an ugly dog and punched three water coolers to emphasize her point.
