Garbage in, garbage out…

Tim Post probably didn’t grasp the importance of this photo that he took at a pre-season practice… but now there’s word from the league’s commissioner:

“Our league has received a citizen complaint about trash left behind at the softball fields.  I know the trash containers are sometimes overflowing, but do what you can.  Please pickup your trash at both the fields and parking areas.  Thanks.”

I’m just glad Tim never got a photo of lightning striking the pitcher’s mound or something…

Lost game; found stone

Posted under Uncategorized

knee1There were more injuries Tuesday night (Tim Post’s knee takes a beating after a collision at 2nd base) but no one added to the DL.

In the end, though, MPR lost to the Swingers 15-12.

Gus hit a homer in the first inning, while Linda Wareham failed as third base coach.

But the story of the night happened after the game: Zack Rose lost the stone out of his family heirloom ring when he was up to bat.  After the game, both teams combined to form a bipartisan search party for the stone.

Jeff Bina saved the day when he found the stone on the third base line and Zack was reunited with said heirloom.

Photog!

Tim Post doesn’t hit a home run every time at the plate, but he takes some great photos at the games.  Below, he captures a crushing hit that resulted in a weak fly out for captain Tom Weber, in Tom’s first and hitherto only at-bat this season.

This website here doesn’t like panoramic shots very much, so make sure to visit MPR softball’s flickr site to see some more cool stuff from Tim:

Worst. Captain. Ever.

Posted under Uncategorized

The Capitol Offenders beat MPR Thursday 20-11… meaning the team was outscored a combined 54-21 this week.

Johnny Rothman made some nice plays and went yard to help soften the blow.  Jeff Jones almost ran over an old man while chasing a foul ball.  But Tim Post recorded his first two putouts of the season in the outfield!

Once again, the weakest link was the rookie captain who made the stupidest defensive play in the history of softball AND flew out to end the game – all in a span of eight minutes.

Captain Tom was proclaimed to be the “worst captain ever” at the following well-attended chalk talk.  Randy Greenly made an appearance – and Johnny Rothman had his first Chalk Talk beer ever.

Tuesday thumpin’

Jim took a shot to the chin, a week after taking one to the shin

Jim took a shot to the chin, a week after taking one to the shin

The team lost Tuesday to Mother Goose by a grand total of 34-10.  As Rich Y. said to Coach Jill: “It was so bad, it feels like we lost two games”.

Randall and Chris Bjork nailed homeruns.  Jill blames the loss on a “few bad innings”.

Injury report:  Jim McGuinn takes a ball to the face.  Leaving behind stitch marks and a bruise on his face.  Srini breaks his finger… these guys have heart!  Chalk talk well attended with a surprise visit from Randy Greenly!

Talking chalk at JR Macs

Posted under Scores/Recaps

chalk-talk

17 people showed up to chalk talk on a night when only 12 people played in the game. They were there to celebrate a 11 to 7 victory over the Money Shots. Linda Wareham anchored the defense with a solid complete game at first base. Johnny Rothman contributed four hits and ended the game with a spectacular play at short.  Molly Bloom nearly took the head off a trash-talking third baseman, and Audrey had a fine time at the bar, refusing to nap.

Shorthanded squad puts up a good fight

Posted under Uncategorized

jim-bruise-leg1We lost, but it was close. We had to call the game after the 6th because of time and rain. 21-28. Not too bad. The other team had a hell of a 3rd or 4th inning, but hey, we only had 8 players in the field! We started strong and scored lots of runs. My hat tipped to Fred for pitching the whole game! My favorite moment is when Mason knew he was going to get burned in the outfield and threw his glove at the soaring ball as a last attempt to knock it down.

Yes, we played with 3 women… which meant we could only play 5 men at a time. We were able to rotate some guys in halfway through the game so everyone could still play! The hits were impressive, the RBI’s were a plenty and even after a bit of a soaking, we still managed to have fun. Jim McGuinn took a hopping ball to the shin. Left a nice goose egg… well, more like ostrich egg… more like goiter, but I hear it’s much better. Should make for a nice bruise anyway.

Chalk Talk was canceled due to exhaustion and soaked bones. 🙂

MPR comes up short in a squeaker

Posted under Uncategorized

wareham-hitsIt was a beautiful night for softball. The game was close throughout. But B Dubs got the last licks and they licked us in the end. Final score B Dubs 12, MPR 11.

Off to a winning start

Posted under Uncategorized

Jill Riley, in her first game as Tuesday night coach, led the ballclub to a 14 to 9 victory over B Dubs. There was a little rain, but not enough to spoil the fun. MPR played solid defense, including two double plays started by Fred. Mason established himself as an early favorite for the Bombat award. About 10 folks dissected the victory at chalk talk.
