Taking the Field

Posted under Scores/Recaps

Randy is always preparedThe rain stopped falling just before game time and the bats warmed up as the evening wore on, providing just enough offense for a 14 to 13 victory over Alary’s. The lead changed hands several times during the game and the tying run was on third base in the 7th inning when Suds calmly snagged a hot shot and threw out the runner to end the game. Maria and Jill burned the Alary’s outfielders with impressive drives. At least three people drank Guinness at the bar.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Tom Weber gets ready for the seasonThis year we’ve had the fewest number of pre-season practices in team history. And now our first two games were cancelled due to rain and forfeiture. Despite that, rookies like Tom Weber (seen here), are excited about the season ahead.

colleen-tom-waving.jpgA big thank you to Brian and Dawn and Tom and Colleen for hosting the Banquet and Wake again this year. It was a lot of fun and great to see so many people turn out. You can find the Historian’s 2007 report in the column on the left side of this page under Team History.

A Mighty Wind

cliff-hits-in-ofyp-game.jpgIt’s still true. Old age and treachery always overcomes youth and skill. But this year youth and skill put up a good fight. In the end, the Old Farts hung on for a 9-6 victory over the Young Pups. The game was dominated by strong defense. Johnny Rothman made several remarkable plays at short, but the play of the game was made by Tim Dennis. Playing first, he couldn’t see Tom Rothman’s throw from short because it was in the sun. But Tim felt the ball hit his stomach and grabbed it in time to record the out.

CHAMPIONS!!!

Posted under Scores/Recaps

2007-tourny-winners.jpgIt may not be the biggest trophy we’ve ever won, but it’s the one with the important word on it… Champions. After playing in this tournament for 20 years and finishing second the last two years, we finally won it all on August 4th, 2007. The championship team went 5-0, beating the Love Gloves, Alary’s, Had Our Shots and the Capitol Offenders (twice). We had timely hitting, but it was the defense, led by Johnny Rothman, Gus Liepitz and Rebecca Apel, that continually demoralized our opponents with spectacular plays in the field.

Our other entry in the tournament started off by beating Explosive D, a team that went a long way in the loser’s bracket, before succumbing to the Capitol Offenders and OBB’s.

Having two teams in the tournament was another first for us. Thanks to everybody who came out to play. I hope you had fun. Running this team has been an honor and a pleasure for me.

-Jim

cliff-with-stickers.jpg…at the bar. A big crowd turned out at the chalk talk to celebrate the end of the regular season. There was an early scare when the beer taps started failing, but the Summit never stopped flowing.

The play of the game occured when Chris struck out Joe Mansky of the Capitol Offenders, an unprecedented occurence according to his teammates.

Streak ends

ben-running.jpgAfter months without a winner, Kari Ness opened a $100 pull-tab at the chalk talk after Tuesday’s game. There was much rejoicing. We also toasted Ben Wareham who played in his last game before he heads to India for a four-month student teaching gig. Ben had three hits in the game, including a home run.

But the defense was sloppy again as Mother Goose beat us 21 to 12.

Gus made several outstanding running catches in the outfield.

Floored

Starting pitcher Jim Bickal set the tone by walking the first three batters, as the ballclub was out of kilter all night. After beating Top Floor twice earlier in the season, they nipped us this time by a final score of 10 to 9.

The Top Floor pitcher made the defensive play of the game, snagging a shot by Gus.

Rally falls short

Posted under Scores/Recaps

fans.jpgSome fans headed to the bar before the end of the game and missed an exciting comeback in the seventh inning as we scored six runs to tie it up. Allison had the key hit in the inning, a triple which drove in two runs. But the Agwarriors came back with a run in the bottom of the seventh to win it 22 to 21.

Fred made the defensive play of the game, an acrobatic catch after a long run from his shortstop position.

Diamond delight

Jenner’s ringLeft fielder Bill Wareham threw out a baserunner at third base in the seventh inning to help thwart a budding rally by Probation as MPR held on for a 15 to 13 victory. Bill’s son Ben was one of the hitting stars with a home run and four RBIs.

Gus made the defensive play of the game with a diving grab in the third inning on a fly ball to short centerfield.

And Jenner played while wearing her new engagement ring. Congratulations to Jenner, Ryan and the ballclub.
