Our heroes continued their winning ways Thursday with a 14-13 win over the Cherry Pit. It looked like offense might dominate in the 1st inning as we jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but in what has become this season’s trend, defense proved the key. Though the Pit managed to inch back to tie the score over the last couple innings, they were never able to mount a serious rally, the kind of spirit-sucking avalanche of scoring that turns each trip to the field into a walk of dread. Defensive gem honors go to Tom Scheck for the second time this week, for his 7th inning over-the-shoulder catch of a ball that threatened to drop in for demoralizing little hit to short centerfield.  The other Scheck, Colleen, gets honorable mention for a hanging on to a spinning pop-up behind the plate while their ump exhorted her to drop it. (Yes, this is becoming a nasty trend.)

 Also worth noting, solid debuts by  MPR rookies Larissa Anderson and her Beau, as well as a successful return by itinerant slacker Ben Wareham.

The bats came back to life in the second game Tuesday night as we beat Roadkill 23 to 12 for a rare doubleheader sweep. This was the team’s sixth straight win, putting our overall record at 9-1-2.

The defensive play of the game was made by Clifford. Playing shortstop, he made a long run to catch a popup in left field at a key point in the game.

A third straight strong performance by the defense led by rookie pitching sensation Fred Child resulted in a 17 to 3 win over Top Floor (didn’t we just play them?).

The defensive play of the game was made by Amy who caught a pop up while playing catcher despite being screamed at by the batter.

The batter, nicknamed Showboat, is the latest nitwit to employ this tactic against us (thank you A-Rod). The list of potential Wicks continues to grow.

Nobody said anything about it at the chalk talk, but the question hung in the air like the scent of deep-fryer grease and stale beer: How is it that opponent run production suddenly jumped a whopping 50 percent from Tuesday to Thursday?

OK, Brian, it was grease and beer. Mr. Bakst turned in another fine performance on the mound, aided by an equally good defense, to hold the Capitol Offenders to three runs, for a 14-3 win. The Scheck infield duo proved particularly adept at knocking down balls up the middle and making outs (but not making out – married couples don’t do that.)

You only need one hand to tally up the runs scored by both teams combined in Tuesday night’s, uh, defensive gem. Fortunately, MPR managed to reserve three digits on that proverbial hand, our opponents only two. Whew!

Defensive play of the game honor goes to Jeff Jones for his 7th inning game-saving grab, pictured above. It looked like a gapper by a batter who represented the winning run until Jeff came sweeping across from his post in right field to snare it on the run.

Nancy hit two homers and drove in five runs. Jenner, who was battling a cold, hit a homer and a triple and also drove in five runs. All four of those hits burned the opposing outfielders and were not a product of the errorless Eichten scoring system. Amy made the defensive play of the game with a nice running catch in right centerfield.

MPR came from behind to beat Pino’s Pizza 22 to 18. Our season record is now 5-1-2.

Early season Wick candidate: #13 who twice screamed as he ran to a base where a play was being made on him, pinch ran when he wasn’t the last male out and didn’t shake hands after the game.

Offense (and not defense) was on display as we outslugged the Agwarriors 25 to 19.

Shortstop Jeff Johnson did make a fine catch after a long run on a pop up down the left field line.
