Streak ends

Posted under Scores/Recaps

ben-running.jpgAfter months without a winner, Kari Ness opened a $100 pull-tab at the chalk talk after Tuesday’s game. There was much rejoicing. We also toasted Ben Wareham who played in his last game before he heads to India for a four-month student teaching gig. Ben had three hits in the game, including a home run.

But the defense was sloppy again as Mother Goose beat us 21 to 12.

Gus made several outstanding running catches in the outfield.

Starting pitcher Jim Bickal set the tone by walking the first three batters, as the ballclub was out of kilter all night. After beating Top Floor twice earlier in the season, they nipped us this time by a final score of 10 to 9.

The Top Floor pitcher made the defensive play of the game, snagging a shot by Gus.

Rally falls short

Posted under Scores/Recaps

fans.jpgSome fans headed to the bar before the end of the game and missed an exciting comeback in the seventh inning as we scored six runs to tie it up. Allison had the key hit in the inning, a triple which drove in two runs. But the Agwarriors came back with a run in the bottom of the seventh to win it 22 to 21.

Fred made the defensive play of the game, an acrobatic catch after a long run from his shortstop position.

Jenner’s ringLeft fielder Bill Wareham threw out a baserunner at third base in the seventh inning to help thwart a budding rally by Probation as MPR held on for a 15 to 13 victory. Bill’s son Ben was one of the hitting stars with a home run and four RBIs.

Gus made the defensive play of the game with a diving grab in the third inning on a fly ball to short centerfield.

And Jenner played while wearing her new engagement ring. Congratulations to Jenner, Ryan and the ballclub.

Linda drinkingSome are blaming a bold prediction by our spiritual leader, others cite the recent spate of in-game drinking. Whatever the cause, the losing streak is now three games. Tonight, Doc’s Landing beat us for the second time this year. The final score was 11 to 4.

Mindy, playing catcher, made the defensive play of the game, alertly snagging a little pop up to cut short a budding rally.

Too many Shots

Posted under Scores/Recaps

chris-scorekeeping.jpgWe fell behind early and weren’t able to come back. Had Our Shots won by a final score of 25 to 16, leaving them as the only undefeated Tuesday night team. Gus had a big night with two home runs and seven RBIs.

There were a number of fine defensive plays including a diving grab of a line drive by pitcher Jim Bickal.

At one point late in the game, several MPR players were seen enjoying a chilled malt beverage. This was a break with the long-standing team tradition that we wait until the chalk talk for that type of refreshment.

Chalk talk!

Posted under Scores/Recaps

Bill hitsTom, Nancy and Johnny Rothman drove in a total of 16 runs to lead the ballclub to a 29 to 14 win over The Who in the first game of the double-header. That extended our winning streak to 11 straight games.

In the second game, we came from behind to tie the score 13 to 13 after seven innings, sending the game into extras. But our luck ran out when we squandered a golden opportunity to win it in the eighth. The Capitol Offenders scored three in the top of the ninth. The final score was 16 to 14.

Johnny Rothman was the defensive player of the night with many fine plays at short. As one fan noted, “thank god for reproduction.”

The highlight of the week was seeing the Eichtens at all three games and both chalk talks because that’s what it’s all about.

Ten straight!

Posted under Scores/Recaps

Annie hitsThe defense led the way again with solid play all around. Annie drove in the go-ahead run with a single (seen here) in the bottom of the sixth as we beat Explosive D by a score of 7 to 4.

We have now won ten straight games. This is uncharted ground for the ballclub.

The defensive play of the game came with one out and the based loaded in 5th inning. Cliff grabbed a hot grounder at third, stepped on the base for one out and then threw home to Jenner who tagged the runner to complete the double-play.

Tom Scheck made the defensive play of the game with a leaping grab at short.

8th Straight win

Kate called outThe Treehuggers had no runs and no hits through the first five innings before breaking through with three runs in the sixth. MPR’s offense was not explosive, but steady and the result was an 11 to 3 victory.

Kate playing in her last game before departing for Switzerland was called out on strikes in her last at bat by merciless home plate umpire Randy Greenly. See her reaction in the photo.

Val made the defensive play of the game: a running catch and throw from right center, doubling a runner off third.

Val also nominated a Wick candidate: the first basewoman who wouldn’t stop ragging on Val for taking a walk in her last at bat.
