Capitol Offense

Posted under Scores/Recaps & Uncategorized

Brian and Tom Almanac at the CapitolI know you all have friends and family and other things going on in you life, but softball needs to be the top priority. Case in point, Thursday’s loss to the Capitol Offenders which I blame on Brian and Tom. They have clearly been concentrating more of their energy primping for the TV cameras, than mentally preparing for softball. Brian was obviously pondering his next piece of political punditry as he stood motionlessness while strike two landed on the carpet. And you could tell that Tom was mentally selecting the tie he would wear on his next appearance on “Almanac at the Capitol” as he made the last out of the game. Sure, he had already driven in six runs in the game, but we expect more.

Thanks!

colleen-tom-waving.jpgA big thank you to Brian and Dawn and Tom and Colleen for hosting the Banquet and Wake again this year. It was a lot of fun and great to see so many people turn out. You can find the Historian’s 2007 report in the column on the left side of this page under Team History.

A Mighty Wind

Posted under Uncategorized

cliff-hits-in-ofyp-game.jpgIt’s still true. Old age and treachery always overcomes youth and skill. But this year youth and skill put up a good fight. In the end, the Old Farts hung on for a 9-6 victory over the Young Pups. The game was dominated by strong defense. Johnny Rothman made several remarkable plays at short, but the play of the game was made by Tim Dennis. Playing first, he couldn’t see Tom Rothman’s throw from short because it was in the sun. But Tim felt the ball hit his stomach and grabbed it in time to record the out.

Shattered
This was Al Schoch’s view from the driver’s seat following a pre-season practice in which Mason Wibstad planted a pitch well over the left field fence along Lexington Parkway at Riverside Park. Who woulda thought anyone could do that? (Answer: Not Al)

You can keep track of updates to the MPR Softball site automatically via the RSS feed. It’s much handier than trying to remember to check the site. If you don’t know about RSS, check out this RSS-in-plain-English video from the guys at Common Craft:

I have no idea where he gets this stuff, but Jeff Johnson’s fictional take on that sense of hope at the outset of every softball season is hilarious.

Team history re-preserved

Posted under Uncategorized

Phew! After digging around in the virtual recycling bin that was the database from the old site, I managed to drag out The Historian’s rock-solid recollections of seasons past. There’s still some work to do to make some of the years readable, but most of it’s intact and available via the links in the sidebar and on the Team History page.

They say that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. We may still be doomed, but not for lack of memory.

MPR Softball site has new look, under reconstruction

Posted under Uncategorized

All bilware.net sites, including the MPR Softball site, suffered a tragic collapse a few months ago when I inadvertently disconnected the site manager from the database that held all the content. Turns out that’s bad. Oops.

I’ve revived this site with software that I think will make it easier to maintain, especially by Jim Bickal and others who wish to contribute. And, eventually, I think I’ll be able to get the team history and all the other fun stuff posted here again.
